Brazil redirects cachaça exports and targets the European Market

Amid numerous global trade tensions, Brazil may strategically prioritize the European market to expand sales of its main national distilled spirit. To mitigate the losses resulting from the recent 50% surcharges applied by the United States, ApexBrasil and the Brazilian Institute of Cachaça (IBRAC) will allocate BRL 2.63 million to a new sectoral program. The central objective of this mobilization is to establish safer and more profitable trade routes on the European continent and in other partner countries, reducing dependence on unstable traditional buyers.

The viability of this approach to the European Union is supported by official indicators released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa). According to statistics from the Cachaça Yearbook, the sector recorded a revenue of USD 14.5 million, corresponding to 6.7 million liters exported in 2024. Data from the same document regarding 2025 demonstrate a sharp growth, reaching USD 17.07 million and 7.96 million liters sold in the foreign market. With this history of growth and with Germany consolidated as a significant importing hub, the Brazilian government plans to expand this growth and presence on the European continent by training between 70 and 80 Brazilian companies to operate directly in international trade fairs and business roundtables.

The introduction of this product into international economic hubs, such as the European market, demands strict intellectual property standards, a challenge that Brazil has overcome through international cooperation. The recent ten-year milestone of the mutual recognition agreement that protects the designations of origin of the Brazilian spirit and Mexican tequila illustrates the country’s commitment to legal certainty and commercial authenticity.
