Brazil-Italy meeting in Brasília reinforces business agenda under the influence of the Mercosur-EU agreement

Government and business representatives from Brazil and Italy met last Friday, September 11, in Brasília, to discuss the expansion of the economic partnership between the two countries. The event, jointly promoted by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), Confindustria, ApexBrasil, the Italian Trade Agency, and the Embassy of Italy, marked the end of an Italian business mission that also visited Buenos Aires and São Paulo, with the objective of bringing companies together and enabling long-term partnerships in areas such as technology and investments.

During the opening, the vice-president of CNI, Jamal Bittar, emphasized the need to strengthen more resilient production chains in the face of the changing international scenario, highlighting that Italy is among Brazil’s main trading partners within the European bloc. According to him, the prospect of advancing the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union does not guarantee, by itself, the growth of bilateral transactions, making it essential for companies to identify concrete opportunities in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, digital technology, energy, infrastructure, machinery, and mining. The vice-president of Confindustria, Barbara Cimmino, and the Italian ambassador, Alessandro Cortese, reinforced that the approximation is strategic to follow the country’s economic guidelines and expand bilateral exchange, with the creation of a joint working group aimed at increasing trade and investments between the two nations being announced.

The meeting also brought data on the weight of industry in the Brazilian economy, presented by the manager of Trade and International Integration at CNI, Constanza Negri, according to whom the sector accounts for 23.4% of the GDP and 67.7% of the country’s exports of goods and services. For the entity, the continuity of this bilateral dialogue, added to the reduction of the so-called “Brazil Cost” and the strengthening of trade defense mechanisms, is fundamental for Brazil to effectively take advantage of the conditions created by the trade approximation between Mercosur and the European Union.
