Brazil’s exports to the European Union rise 46% in August and increase bilateral surplus

Brazilian foreign trade registered a 46% jump in sales to the European Union in August 2026 compared to the previous year, totaling US$ 5.82 billion, according to figures released by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services on Friday, September 4. The monthly result raised Brazil’s positive balance in trade with the European bloc to US$ 1.10 billion and reinforced the upward trajectory observed throughout the year, since the accumulated total from January to August reached US$ 37.29 billion, an amount 15% higher than that recorded in the same period of 2025.

Herlon Brandão, director of Statistics and Foreign Trade Studies at MDIC, attributed the advance mainly to the strengthening of international demand for commodities in which the country holds a relevant competitive position, also citing the first reflections of the commercial agreement signed between Mercosur and the European Union as a possible stimulating factor. Among the items that drove the performance are crude oil, with US$ 1.33 billion exported and a 34.56% increase, and copper ore, whose sales practically quadrupled, reaching US$ 686 million. Unroasted coffee, soybean meal, and soybeans themselves also had expressive performance, while imports from the European bloc grew more discreetly, by 11.8% in the month and 2.1% in the year to date, which helped to widen the favorable difference for Brazil in the bilateral balance.
