Brazilian hydrogen mission in Germany and Belgium generates five partnerships and brings the country closer to European investors
Between October 19 and 29, 38 Brazilian organizations and companies took part in a mission dedicated to low-carbon hydrogen, with stops in Hamburg and Duisburg, Germany, and Brussels, Belgium. The initiative was organized by ApexBrasil, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Rio de Janeiro, within the scope of the H2Uppp program, conducted by GIZ with the German government and co-financed by the European Union through the Global Gateway strategy. The itinerary combined technical visits, business meetings, and attendance at two of the sector’s main international events, resulting in the announcement of five public-private partnerships, which total more than 5.5 million euros in combined investments, in addition to a memorandum of understanding to stimulate the international trade of hydrogen and its derivatives.
The five partnerships include the structuring of a sustainable synthetic aviation fuel (e-SAF) hub between Pecém and Rotterdam, with the participation of Green Energy Park, the Port of Rotterdam, the Pecém Complex, and the National Service for Industrial Training (SENAI), as well as pre-feasibility studies involving the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Prumo, and the Port of Açu. They also include the search for sustainable sources of biomass CO₂ in Rio Grande do Norte, led by Acciona and Nordex, an e-SAF production model using the Fischer-Tropsch route, and a green hydrogen and ammonia project in Pecém. The memorandum of understanding was signed between the Brazilian Association of the Green Hydrogen Industry (ABIHV) and H2Global, and the European Hydrogen Week, in Brussels, served as a space to debate regulatory conditions, financing mechanisms, and the structuring of commercial chains for synthetic fuels.
For the relationship between Brazil and the European Union, the mission reinforces the Brazilian position as a potential supplier of low-carbon hydrogen, supported by the high share of renewable sources in its electricity matrix, the availability of natural resources, and its port infrastructure.
