Brazilian Chemical Industry Seeks Export Diversification Amid New US Tariffs

Facing the new package of US tariffs on Brazilian products, the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (Abiquim) has begun advocating that opening new markets should cease to be a short-term reaction and become a permanent axis of the commercial policy for the Brazilian chemical sector. The organization bases this position on the Export Diversification Plan “Caminhos + Negócios” (Paths + Business), led by ApexBrasil, and on statements made by its executive president, André Passos Cordeiro.

In 2025, the sector generated US$ 15.5 billion in foreign sales, with US$ 2.13 billion (just over a seventh of the total) coming from deals closed with American buyers. This revenue, however, is concentrated in only five product families, particularly inorganic chemicals, organic chemicals, and industrial additives, which account for nearly three-quarters of everything Brazil sells to the US. Abiquim notes that the Brazilian industry already has an established customer base outside the American axis, specifically citing Spain, Italy, and France as stepping stones for a more consistent expansion into Europe.

For Brazil, deepening this presence on the European continent means not only diluting risks concentrated in a single partner, but also consolidating categories such as organic chemicals and medical-hospital materials in a market that already recognizes the Brazilian product.
